The Free Lantern began as an experiment: can music be created the way open-source software is—collaboratively, transparently, without limits? Drawing from synthwave, deep house, EBM, folk, country, metal, and hip-hop, the project celebrates openness over gatekeeping and community over corporations. The debut album Free by Design pays tribute to the pioneers of free software and the millions of contributors whose code runs everything from phones to supercomputers. Every track is a lantern—a spark carried forward by the community.
